Fence Repair Tips

Should You Repair or Replace a Fence?

If you are wondering whether to repair or replace your fence, then this post may prove useful in making up your mind either way. Many homeowners begin by weighing the pros and cons of the costs. Repainting or fence repair is cheaper and easier than replacement, at least in the short term. Sometimes, replacing the fence will be the only option open to you.

Some fence issues can be resolved with a few simple repairs, so let’s review a few of the common issues when dealing with fences that do not require a full replacement.

Common wood fence issues

Because wood is a natural material, it is prone to damage more than its synthetic counterparts. The elements will eventually take their toll, not to mention insects, moisture, and other environmental factors. Signs that your fence requires repair range from discoloration to warping and splintering. If you begin to see these things, you need to inspect your fence to determine what caused the damage and if you can mitigate it with a solution, such as redirecting any pooling water or exterminating the insects.

To repair wood fences, you can patch any minor holes and cracks with wood filler. For warping or severe damage, replace any affected boards or rails.

The downside of these repairs is they are visible, for a while, at least until it weathers in. Wood filler can be hidden if you decide to paint your fence. Otherwise, it will show forever. Also, a new board will look different in color. However, it could weather in time to a similar patina as the surrounding boards. If you are going to paint your fence after repair, neither of these options will have any drawbacks!
