How to Install Chain Link Fence
When you are performing a chain link fence installation you first need to determine if you need to obtain building and zoning permits. Will your fence meets all the neighborhood deed restrictions, can it create property lines, and more importantly, make sure you check to see where all the underground utilities are located.
Survey Property Lines
As mentioned above, make sure the fence will not exceed your property lines. Most fence installers including DFC Fencing, recommend that posts are set approximately 4″ inside the property line. This helps to prevent encroaching on the adjoining property with concrete footings. This can be done easily by stretching a string along the property line and then setting the posts 4″ inside.
Locate and Set Terminal Posts
The distance between gate posts will be determined by adding the width of the gate that includes an allowance for hinges and latches. Often, walk gates need 3 3/4″ for hinges and latches and a double gate requires 5 1/2″. Once done, you will need to dig the holes.
Terminal posts must be set 2″ higher than the height of the fence and line posts 2″ lower than the height of the fence. Set your terminal posts in concrete, and make sure you use 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 4 parts gravel. There is available a pre-mixed cement option if you want to save time. Just make sure you use a level to ensure the posts are straight.
Locate and set the Line Posts
Once the concrete around the terminal posts has cured, stretch a string between the terminal posts, this needs to be 4″ below the top of the terminal posts. The line posts should never be spaced more than 10 feet apart.
