How to Secure the Bottom of Your Chain Link Fence
The only reason that you need to secure the bottom of your chain link fence is to stop anything from getting under it. Many times it could be to prevent dogs or livestock from getting in, and in high-security applications, it is to prevent people from getting access to secured areas. Whatever your reason is, this chain link fence installation post has you covered.
Install the tension wire on the bottom of the fence, this will help to reinforce the bottom of a chain-link fence and prevents it from ‘pulling’ up if anything tries to push the fabric out and away. This wire will run between each terminal post, however, contrary to popular belief will not be woven into the chain-link fabric as some may think.
During the installation, the bottom tension wire is stretched only after the fence installation has been framed out, meaning posts will have been set, top rail and the bracing have been installed. Tension wire will be then stretched by attaching it to terminal posts by wrapping it directly onto the posts or wrapping it to a nut and then bolt it in place. Chain link fence bottom tension wire will then be stretched using a come-a-long and cable puller, it is stretched on the outside of the fence, after which the chain link fabric will then be stretched.
When it comes to retrofitting a pre-existing chain-link fence with some tension wire. The bottom tie wire that secures the chain link to the posts is removed and then later replaced. Stretch the tension wire outside of the fence, the same side that the fabric is on, opposite the top rail and the posts. Once the tension wire has been stretched, walk along the fence and tuck the bottom tension wire under, and between the posts and the chain-link fabric.
